Happy Birthday Chris Cake

Chis is a volunteer in our office at work. His wife, lovely Beth, asked Chris what he wanted for his birthday and he said a chocolate cake. And so, here it is chocholate fudge cake with milk chocloate butter cream icing and dark chocolate ganache filling, with just an accent of white chocolate. I don't know how you get more chocolate than this!

All new recipes, which is always fun, but a little worrisome when it's for someone else.

Now, onto this week's cake adventure... I'll tell you this. It's a car.

More life than Cake

It has been months since I've posted anything here. I have been busy with work, new friends, and being a bride. Since the award-winning cake at the Central Florida Fair, I've had a few opportunities for cake making and many of not come to fruition. Here's a photo of me at the fair with my first place ribbon! This was in the Amateur, Wedding Cake, Four Tiers or taller category. Yay me! I can't believe I hadn't posted that news here for months.

I am back on the cake wagon though, one cake this week and another coming up next week-- next week's will be a new adventure, so check back and wish me luck!

A Little Friendly Comptetition

So, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have my own personal "Food Network Challenge"-- Okay, it's only the Central Florida Fair, but you gotta start somewhere, right? What was it going to be? A wedding cake. Why? Because when would I have an opportunity to prove I could make something pretty without risking the "biggest day" of some one's life. How big? Four tiers. Why? Because I can.

So, here it is! I would estimate I've put in, oh... let's say...more hours than you'd care to know. But it's comparable to a full week of working at my desk.

My mom and grandmother trekked out to the fairgrounds with me this afternoon to drop it off in the "food sciences" section of the CFL Fair exhibit building. They begin judging tomorrow, and by the time the fair opens on April 16 the ribbons will be distributed!

Even if I don't get a ribbon, I still feel pretty proud of this piece of work. Hope you enjoy!

The first 8 hours

As you may or may not know, any cake takes hours of work to prepare and build-- add sugar flowers and you can easily double or triple your time. I'm getting ready for the Central Florida Fair Confectionary Arts Competition... The cake (dummy cake) will be dropped off for the show on April 12 and I started working on it this week. I sketched about 6 different designs and finally settled on the last one I drew. My first four-tier cake! I'm entering the wedding cake category, so this will be my first wedding cake too.

In order to take my time and really have an opportunity to do the best work I've done yet-- I've gotten started early. Here's a sneak peak at my first 8 hours worth of flowers. Eventually I'll have many more flowers and they'll be dusted and wired together and all that technical stuff. Crysanthamums and yellow roses.

More to come!

Belated Birthday Post

I have been meaning to post this cake for a very long time! Since January, to be exact. It's been so busy at work and in my pesonal life, I've not gotten to make many cakes-- in fact, none since this! But I'm getting back to it. And I'm still determined to master the square. This was my sister's 20th birthday cake. Cute, funky, and pretty, and just enough girly-- just like her! Love you sister!

Central Florida Fair Confectionary Arts Competition

I'm doing it!
I just ordered my very own set of cake dummies from Taylor Foam. So, off to the drawing board now. There are so many categories you can enter... wedding cakes, themed cakes, mini-tiered cakes... I'm thinking I've always wanted to try a "wedding cake," and since this has no actual "big day" on the line, this is the time to do it. Still thinking about it. But, I'm going to sketch out some ideas this week and we'll see what I come up with. Wish me luck!
